The following information provides you about the different usage of essential oils.

External

  • Baths
    Aromatherapy baths have been employed for pleasure and therapeutic purposes for thousands of years. Hippocrates, the Father of Western Medicine, mentioned that ' that way to health is to have an aromatic bath and a scented massage every day'. Baths were particularly enjoyed by the ancient Egyptians who had public baths; at the same time, they present the important aspect of social life. Water itself is therapeutic; " water cures' are advocated by naturopaths, and various forms of hydrotherapy can be found in use nowadays at health farms and natural therapy centres.
  • Hydrotherapy baths and Jacuzzi
    Some people, nowadays, have their own Jacuzzi or hydrotherapy baths. Use the same number of drops as you would in a normal bath. Sprinkle in you essential oils after the bath has been filled.
  • Footbaths and handbaths
    Footbaths and handbaths are highly beneficial in situations where it is impractical to enjoy a full aromatherapy bath, especially for aged and disabled people. Footbaths are incredibly relaxing at the end of a long, hard day especially. They are excellent for foot conditions such as athlete's foot and pain and swelling in the feet. Handbaths help to relieve the pain, stiffness and swelling from arthritis.
  • Sitz baths and bidets
    The Sitz and bidet bath are invaluable in cases of cystitis, haemorrhoids, vaginal discharge, stitches after childbirth, and so on. Sprinkle about four to six drops of essential oil into a bowl of hot water sit in the bowl for about ten minutes. Ensure that essential oil and water are thoroughly mixed.
  • Jug douche
    Jug douche is excellent for combating vaginal discharge and infections as well as anal problems. Boil a kettle and allow the water cool n a one-litre jug ensuring that there is no limescale. Add six drops of essential oil. Life both the seat as well as the lid of the toilet. Stand over the toilet and pour the solution over the viginal and anal area. Dry the area gently.
  • Showers
    A shower can never be as relaxing as a bath when using essential oils. However, it can be quite motivating way to begin your day. Apply six drops of essential oil to a sponge or a flannel and rub all over your body..
  • Compresses
    Compresses can be used for a variety of disorders such as muscular aches and pains, bruises, rheumatic and arthiritic pain, headaches and sprains. You may apply compresses either hot or cold. To make a compress, mix approximately six drops of essential oil into a small bowl of water. Soak any piece of absorbent material such as a flannel, piece of sheeting or towelling in the solution ensuring that as much essential oil as possible is absorbed by your fabric. Squeeze out eh compress so it does not drip everywhere and apply to the affected area.
  • Gargles and mouthwashes
    Gargles and mouthwashes are good for sore throats, respiratory problems and loss of voice particularly.
  • Inhalations
    Inhalations of essential oils works upon the body, mind and spirit. The inhalation of essential oils has a profound effect on the nervous system helping to relieve insomnia, anxiety and stress-related disorders, and lifting depression and negativity.
  • Steam inhalation
    Add tow to four drops of essential oil to a bowl of hot water. Cover your head with a towel and lean over the bowl inhaling deeply for one to five minutes.
  • Water bowl
    Put boiling water into a small bowl and add to six drops of essential oil. Place the bowl on to a warm place. Close the doors and windows for a few minutes to enable the aroma to fill the room.
  • Handkerchief/ tissue
    Place two to six drops of essential oil on to a handkerchief, paper towel or tissue and take a few deep breaths. This method is particularly effective for relieving nasal congestion and also for stopping panic attacks.
  • Hands
    In a crisis situation put one drop of lavender on to your palm, rub your hands together, cup them over your nose and then breathe deeply.
  • Room spray
    A room spray is an excellent way of purifying the atmosphere.
  • Vaporisers & diffusers
    Electric vaporisers are sometimes used in clinics and hospital settings since they are considered to be safe. Electric diffusers, which do not use heat, are also becoming popular. However, both vaporisers and diffusers particularly are rather expensive.
  • Pillow & nightwear method
    Sparkle a few drops of essential oils on pillows or your nightwear for relief from insomnia and to encourage easier and deeper breathing.
  • Light bulb ring
    Two drops of essential oil can be sprinkled on to a ceramic or metal ring that fits on to a light bulb.
  • Radiator fragrancer
    Two to six drops of essential oil are placed into a ceramic container that fits on to a radiator by means of a magnet.
  • Open fire
    Put one drop of essential oil on each log before lighting the fire. When the logs heat up, the aroma will be released into the room. Like Cypress, sandalwood and cedarwood, they are particularly effective.
  • Candles
    Add one to two drops of essential oil to the warm wax of a candle taking care to avoid the wick since essential oils are flammable.
  • Message
    The combination of pour essential oils and massage is one of the more effective and beneficial treatment techniques. Essential oil constituents pass through the skin and they are taken into bloodstream and can be carried to all the cells of the body.
  • Ointments and creams
    Putting some cream or ointment on a particular area of the body rather than oil makes body smell good.

Internal
As essential oils taste so powerful and bitter and can cause irritation they should be ingested in once of the following ways.
1. 2-3 drops in a little red wine
2 2-3 drops in honey water (one teaspoon so honey to one-third cup of water) or in a spoonful of honey
3. 2-3 drops in a dessertspoon of olive oil (extra virgin)
4. 2-3 drops on a sugar lump

The three times daily for no more than three weeks and do not give essential oils by mouth to babies or pregnant women.
